A Mix of Reflections

by Mabel Au
(Mississauga, Ontario, Canada)

Reflection of the building on the shiny globe mixed with the reflection of trees on the calm koi pond created a colorful artistic image. The two red koi in the water with their distinctive color added some life to the picture.
Where's the photographer? ... I shot this picture from behind the window on the upper level of the building, I could almost see my own reflection on the ball when zoom in. Picture taken in Las Vegas.

Interesting!
by: Julie

Interesting shot, Mabel! It's hard to tell what's real and what's reflection, and even the real looks a bit surreal! That must have been quite a telephoto you used if you were inside the building. You have a keen eye to spot that photo from so far away!

Natures Make up

by Toni Balestra
(Aspen, CO, USA)

My boyfriend always plans a surprise trip for my birthday and this year it was Aspen. He drives me anywhere and everywhere to take pictures. We can be going down the road and see something that I want to take a picture of and he turn around an go back so that I can get me picture. This has been one of my favorite reflection pictures that I have taken. Love the bright bold color and how beautiful and peaceful this place is, and enjoyed hiking around here.

The colours in this are gorgeous -- really bright and rich. You might consider darkening the bottom right corner just a little to keep the eye inside the frame better. Overall, a beautiful shot! Thanks for sharing.

I agreed with Julie. Crop about 1/3 from the right, don't show the end of the boardwalk, the strong diagonal lines of the bridge and its reflection will make the picture more interesting to look at.

reflections NEW
by: Julie

The light on the boardwalk here is lovely. The reflection itself is terrific, and definitely the strongest part of the image. I'm not too sure about the composition, though. The line of the boardwalk is very strong, but when I follow it, it doesn't lead me anywhere; there's no visual "reward" at the end. The land around the boardwalk isn't terribly "pretty" either, without any vegetation.

I'm guessing that it was the boardwalk and its reflection that caught your eye, and caused you to want to take a photo. If that's the case, I'd suggest coming in closer to make more of a study of just those elements, and highlighting the great shapes and patterns that are present, perhaps in more of an abstract.

That's just my $0.02! What do others think?

Thanks for sharing the photo.

Luba, I love the Fall colours too! This is one of those cases, where I think putting the horizon in the middle of the image works, because it emphasizes the symmetry of the forest and its reflection. Nicely done!

Wrinkly cabbage tree

On reflection

On reflection

When a friend and I went looking for reflections at the local Sanctuary Ponds it had dried up with the present drought. We were saved by the tide pushing up behind the ponds into this waterway. The cabbage tree beside the footbridge provided the reflection and I have sharpened and coloured to make something more interesting. The tufts of grass showing through the water add to the image.

balance NEW
by: Julie

I like the colours as you've processed them, and I really like the reflected areas of this image. I do find it a little out of balance with such a heavy dark area on the right. You might consider taking a chunk off the right side of this image, and cropping it to a square. I think that would strengthen what remains. Thanks for sharing!

Beautiful!
by: Julie

A beautiful, soft reflection of a skyline that's very familiar to me! I love the colours, and the way they melt together. I do find myself wishing that the reflected strip on the right side was not quite so bright, given how close it is to the edge of the frame; I wonder if you could post-process it down a little? Also, what do others thing about the rocks in the front? Are they an anchor, or a distraction? I'm not sure they add to the story. Overall, though, a lovely, tranquil image. Thanks for sharing!

The reflection here gives a whole added dimension to the image. The photo wouldn't have nearly the same impact without it. Compositionally, the reflected monks form an upside down triangle that mirrors shape of the temple roof, creating some balance in the image. Well spotted! Glad you caught that puddle!

lines NEW
by: Julie

I like that you've used a strong horizontal line in this image to convey the sense of peacefulness. Horizontal lines lend stability to an image, and work well in this case. I do like how the "squiggly" vertical reflections break up that strong horizontal to give some interest. The reflections here are a little tricky, since some of the reflected reeds are closer to the camera, and so the reflection's midpoint is in a different place to the main line - keeps it interesting. Thanks for sharing!

Reflective Water Drop

by Gary Wiesner
(Hillsborough, NJ, USA)

One morning after a snowfall in Cape May NJ, I was just shooting water drops. I find them interesting for some unknown reason. While reviewing my photos in Lightroom something caught my eye.
I enlarged this photo and found this reflection. It's style reminds me of Edvard Munch's style of Symbolism of which The Scream is one of my favorite paintings.

A good eye NEW
by: Anonymous

You have a very good eye to be seeing an image in a drop of water. I see what you mean about this photo reminding you or 'The Scream.'

Are you sure this is a reflection? Most often an image in a drop is a result of refraction and the drop acting as a lens. In that case the image in the drop would be of an object behind the drop.

Another interesting point about this image is the mottling of the image as if the surface of the drop had little ripples in it. Was there something that perhaps was vibrating or shaking to make the surface of the drop ripply?

Very colourful image! The reflection is nice and clear, and I also like the squiggly background reflections of the vegetation. However, I'm finding that my eye is not sure how to travel around the image, and I think it may just be a bit too busy. I think the reflected vegetation is interesting enough to merit its own image.
