Umbrella Signs

by John
(Bay Village, OH, USA)

This photo shows a very unique and culturally interesting display of signage painted onto umbrellas in Chiang Mai, Thailand. I realize that some of the wording on the signage is provocative, but Hang is an herbal brand of drink in Thailand that is supposed to prevent hangovers. I've never had the need to try their product as I don't drink, but nonetheless found their advertising display to make for a culturally interesting advertising method! A google search of "hang drink Thailand" will bring up plenty of entries about their line of drinks.

I realize that you're trying to encourage people to get out and take photos, but I find this photo compelling as it's both culturally interesting as well the tight shot of the signage in the sunlight being the best way for me to interpret and photograph this unique signage. This photo was taken in October, 2011.

Btw, I'm off to Hong Kong in a week for work. I'll be there for three months and then another 4 - 6 months in Thailand, again for work. My camera's ready! : )

DANGEROUS UNDERTOW

by Manfred Meilinger
(Wasaga Beach)

10 Years ago this sign located at the Wasaga Beach Provincial Park, used to be 50' from the waters edge and about 8' tall. Warning swimmers about the present danger. Due to receding water levels in Lake Huron, the sign is now some 200' from the waters edge. It appears that the sign itself is in danger of being "towed" under by the advancing sand dunes.

Cheers
Manfred

Can You See Me Now...

by Larry Monczka
(Port Ryerse, Ontario, Canada)

Friday the 13th is a gathering place for motorcyclists in huge numbers in the little town of Port Dover, Ontario. It's a great situation to make people pictures in a live-and-let-live atmosphere. I was struck by the juxtaposition of subject and t-shirt message.

Please don't cry!!!

by Lorna
(Saskatchewan, Canada)

Unexpectedly, I came across these two travellers paused on the side of a highway exit ramp two provinces away from their destination. My initial interpretation (and resulting chuckle) was that she was wiping away the tears from her eyes and that he was taking care of the situation by calling a taxi. They had many more kilometers to go!

The pig carved from a tree trunk features in a local vegetable shop window. With ginger and mushrooms added it could make a great dish.

Grease Trap

Grease Trap

Looking for something unusual, I was crossing a street in front of a restaurant (my favorite hamburger place) and happened to look down and see this man-hole cover. Except it wasn't a sewer access, it was a Grease Trap!

trash4flash

by Russ Donaldson
(Cobourg, Ontario, Canada)

We were travelling in Greece in 2012 when we spotted a very unique gallery selling women's jewellery made out of pieces of trash bric-a-brac ...... most unusual but very attractive. Even more unusual was the name of the gallery ..... trash4flash ..... I've been waiting for an opportunity to share the name with others. Thanks for providing that opportunity.

I took this shot of part of a mural on the side of a brick discount liquor store in Waukesha WI . When I got it on the computer the image was too light so I reversed the colors to get the spooky effect. Enjoy!

Taken in the small town of Ollantaytambo, Peru. I loved the juxtaposition of the small mountain spring water coming out under the toilet sign.

No Reversing!

No Reversing!

No Reversing!

This sign was on the back wall of a cafe in Regent's Park, London this past May. I asked several staff members in the cafe what it means, and none of them knew. One meaning of "Banksman" in the Oxford English Dictionary is the person in charge directing of all traffic in and out of a mine. I believe the sign means that no truck should back up toward the cafe unless there is a person on the ground directing the driver.

Drive-Thru Pharmacy

by Rick
(Nashville, TN, U.S.A.)

I was sitting in my truck at the traffic light one morning when I noticed this interesting information. I immediately saw an image that did not seem to go with the words.

I rolled down my window and tried to capture the image while watching for the light to change and looking for an opening in the line of cars that were whizzing past between me and the pharmacy. Yes, I was smiling as I used my trusty Nikon Coolpix S6000 to make this photo.
