The Spirit of Ecstasy

by Mabel Au

This figurine tells you what kind of luxury vehicle you are looking at. It is standing on the hood of a CAD$571,000 Rolls-Royce, shot at the 2013 Toronto Auto Show.

edit -- Mabel uploaded a new image, and writes: "Note: Julie, MS Picture Manager somehow changed the color when I reduced the size, I've eliminated the red color in the background. "

This is definitely a part that tells the whole story. The warm, rich colours really reinforce the sense of luxury here. I like the diagonals through the image. The red in the background is a touch distracting. I winder if you could tone it down a little in post?

Snow Leopard Cub

While visiting the Cape May NJ zoo, this 6 month snow leopard cub caught my attention. There were two of them yet this one seemed more outgoing and playful. The entire photo shows the cub chewing on a piece of a log in the cage. Did my best to take the photo at an angle to eliminate the cage.

This photo has become almost abstract because of the monochromatic colours, and the pattern of the cub's fur. You've definitely captured the key bits that we need to see: eyes and nose. I like your tight crop. Great sparkle in the eyes - gives the image life.

Dreaming In Overdrive

by Ron Chalecki
(Hamilton ON, Canada)

This was at the end of a cruise night an cars were leaving the park. As the light had fallen off, shutter speeds had also. I decided to take advantage of that and strive for some blur. This image was my favourite, given the car being a Corvette and liked the effect I achieved. Added some diffusion to better simulate a dreamlike appearance.

Blacks NEW
by: Julie

Did any of that dark black come from blending multiple layers? If so, one way to bring back detail from the blacks is to open the layer style dialog, and play with the blend-if sliders. It's a bit tough to describe without pictures, but there's a good tutorial here:

http://www.photoshopessentials.com/photo-effects/blend-if/

You'd want to do something like split the black slider on the bottom (underlying layer), and set the left to about 25 and the right to about 100.

Not sure if this applies to your image, but thought it worth a mention.

Flower & a Puppy

Flower & a Puppy

An artificial flower and a 11 week old puppy....now what could you do with that.
Well as you all might know puppies have more energy and curiosity than most of us put together. Here I was doing some portrait shots of Cassie (the puppy) and we came up with the idea of...yes you guessed it, how do we get the puppy to do something cute? What would the puppy do with the flower?
I captured this image in the split second she sat still observing, just before she pounced at the flower.
I also have a series of shots where the last one is her crashing into the flower and squeezing her eyes shut on contact. Priceless...

This is a very striking image! I really love it. I'm not sure that it tells the story of the whole, though -- what do others think about that?

It does make a fabulous abstract, with the strong colour and lines. What do you think about cropping a little from the top? That would put the nose of the boat a little more off-centre vertically, and get rid of the tiny bit of black in the top-right.

Love it! Thanks for sharing!

The main lines of your composition work really well to strengthen your story. I definitely feel the pull of the fly toward the centre. To make the image even stronger, just watch those edges! It is a great photo but might have been better if the cat had been looking right at the camera. I know how very difficult to make a cat do anything. The challenge with animals is to get them to do what you want.
