Awaiting Restoration

by Ronald
(Canada BC)

On a trip into Washington State heading down to Oregon, we visited the town of Snoqualmie. Snoqualmie has a great Railway museum as well as several old cars & engines that require quite a bit of restoration,I noted how badly rusted this engine was,as were some others, just waiting their turn for the volunteers to start their work on them.

Time Machine!

by Lorna
(Saskatchewan, Canada)

Raised slightly above our backyard bird bath is this unique sundial that over time has transformed into a rusty ornamental feature. Obviously our birds enjoy splashing (a lot) during their baths and are a very active component of our nature watching experiences.

I spent a month looking for rust! Everything here in Wisconsin is painted over, nice and shining! So I went to the backyard and just started taking pictures of rust-colored things! Enjoy!

Rusty Tones

by Pierre Falzon
(Pickering, Ontario, Canada)

I was immediately attracted by the reddish tones of the rust on this old car sitting in a junk yard. A bonus was the chrome handle and the green painted body which provided some contrasting elements.

A natural rust ...

by Todd Richardson
(Clarkston, Washington, USA)

I don't know if this qualifies as "rust" in the common sense ... but it is discoloration of oxidized metals. This was taken in the hot pot area of Yellowstone National Park. The way the colors naturally blended and flowed and the water over the colors intrigued me.

Rusty Gears

Rusty Gears

There is a public 'berry patch' nearby, and we take family and visitors there at Thanksgiving or Christmas when pumpkins are in season. There are usually photo ops a-plenty because there are crates of Indian corn and other things you see around a farm.
In this case, the photo was taken of an old abandoned piece of farm machinery, which I have no clue what it was used for. But I thought the texture was interesting. Hope y'all do too.

This image was from an old abandoned fire truck near Wawa, Ontario. As you can see it's faded from red to pink. I really like the rust that's under the peeling paint.

Rusty but trusty

Rusty but trusty

Locked out while on holiday I got instructions by text where the spare key was. The rusty key got me into the shed where there was a cupboard etc etc etc.
I never got past the rusty key. By the time I took my "rust" photos the family were home again.

Rusty Anchor

by Denise Smith
(South Africa)

I was looking for something different to photograph to submit to the Camera Club that I belong to. This photograph was taken at the Durban harbour in South Africa. I liked the rusted effect on the side of the steamer that was moored at a pier in the harbour.

Rust...??, really :-)

by Manfred Meilinger
(Wasaga Beach, ON)

Set out for bike ride yesterday with my rust detector on high. Found plenty of rust, nothing inspiring. On my way home I noticed something rusty flashing by me. I turned around and there it was. A large boulder, containing a lot of iron. I don’t think the boulder is native to our area. We are surrounded by sand and limestone. I was tempted to just show some detailed parts of the rust flaking off the rock. It would have not told the whole story of this uncommon find.

Cheers
Manfred

This photo was taken in Argentia, Newfoundland in June 2012. It is the door of an ammunitions bunker on the site of the abandoned United States WWII military base. It reminded me of a smiley face - so incongrouous considering the purpose of the facility.

Janey Seddon

by Wendy Reeve
(Motueka, NZ)

Originally a mine layer the 'Janey Seddon' was brought to New Zealand in 1903. After serving during both World wars, she became a fishing boat. Now a rusting hulk on the Motueka foreshore, the Janey is a lure for photographers and tourists. There is some dissension whether she is an asset or an eyesore.

Big Wheels Stopped Turning

by Graeme Lawry
(Melbourne, Australia)

This is one of several old Farm Implements on Churchill Island Victoria Australia.
The Island features an historic homestead and is reached by crossing a small bridge from Phillip Island.
When I asked the staff about the implement I was told it was an old plow, but I'm not sure.
What I am sure about is that it is part of the area's rich farming history and part of an incredibly interesting story.

Last Trip?

by Brian Palmer
(Whitby, ON)

On the way to my cottage, I stopped in Kaladar, Ontario and spotted this very old Jeep. It was badly rusted with paint peeling sitting on the trailer in the pouring rain looking so forlorn.

I recorded several images thinking about this contest. Some were close-ups of the rusty parts and the peeling paint. This one does not illustrate the theme very well but I chose it because it tells a story and asks a question.

The vehicle has seen better days but it has been someone's trusted friend taking them on countless hunting and fishing expeditions where no ordinary vehicle can even think of going.
Where is it going now? Is it going to a garage for repair? to a collector for restoration? or to a steel recycling facility where it will be melted down in a fiery furnace?

Is this its last trip? I hope not.

CHALLENGE WINNER! CONGRATULATIONS!!

These patterns were captured from the trunk of an old rusted Studebaker in a scrapyard. A polarizer helped to boost the colours a little and some CS5 processing enhanced the image further.
